What's the difference between solid plastering and rendering?

Ultimately, and quite surprising for some, nothing.

The trade itself is called solid plastering, however rendering has become the more referred to term over the years. The application and finishing of render is just a minor component of the solid plastering qualification, making solid plasterers true artisans.

The art of solid plastering dates back almost 10,000 years. Solid plastering has been dated back in countries such as Rome, Jordan, India, China and Egypt. The art originated using materials such as crushed limestone, clay, gypsum plaster, sand and marble dust, with additives including hair, malt, beer and eggs.

Nurturing ancient techniques has allowed solid plastering to evolve to the wide variety of finishes we see in todays society. The application of render has remained quite similar, as have some of the key materials such as lime, clay, and sand. Only, the products we use today are now formulated using modern science and technology to meet the demands of climates and construction materials.
